Watches are a simple and
small clock usually worn on the wrist in order for you to tell the time. Well,
of course this is how it began. Nowadays watches are a symbol of power, the
more expensive the watcher adorned the wrist, the more status you possess.
Has this image really gotten
ridiculous? Of course it is great to have a nice watch, a keepsake that means
something sentimental to be won as jewellery, but these classic watches of
course allow for the prime purpose of actually telling the time to be carried
out. The bulky and completely sparkly watches cannot simply have this purpose.
Is this a reflection of our
current society, are we more impressed by the price tag and are we neglecting
the practicality of an item? It really seems this way. We see a parade of
celebrities smothered in expensive jewels especially watches, but it really
doesn’t signify anything other than; well, you have an expensive watch and I
don’t.
Now of course the
advancement of technology is vast, old watches simply allowed us to check the
time. However watches today are a lot more advanced which of course increases
the price, but do we really need all of the fancy gadgets. Of course having the
date stated is a handy extra, seeing the clock in twenty four hour time is also
a perk. However the watches measuring altitude, speed and distance is probably
only useful if you are a pilot or budding astronaut.
Overall no, the price tag
really isn’t important. We focus so much around the price of an item nowadays
we neglect the simplicities of life. Remember your first watch? It was probably
a brightly coloured plastic strap with a small clock face practically glued on.
It was fun, special and useful.
Now it seems that these
days, unless we have a rather fancy watch to parade about, we simply resort to
technology to tell the time. Our IPhones and iPad’s taking over the simple
clock face.
It isn’t nostalgia that mourns
the standard watch, its classic things, simple possessions and the focus on
something useful than something expensive. Whether it’s the celebrity era we
live in or whether we simply have forgotten what it was like ten years ago, the
fact is that we really do treasure a price tag more than what the watch
actually does. We pay more for something that looks attractive and this really
needs to stop.
